Amy: Screening Reflection

I still remember the media coverage of Amy Winehouse during her spiral downwards. As mentioned in the film, people were making a joke out of her severely troubled lifestyle. This is often the sad reality of a lot of celebrities with mental health issues. A cry for help becomes a media frenzy, overshadowing a broken and misguided individual. Amy Winehouse had a voice of a goddess, but the temptations that came along with fame and loss became too much for her. The media rarely covered what was underneath the tragedy of Amy. A story of loss, betrayal, and abuse, Amyshows us the behind the scene moments leading directly to her death. Kapadia pieces together very intimate videos that look like they were recorded on an iPhone. This kind of home video style creates a sense of personal connection with the audience.

The soundtrack of this film really helped convey its powerful message. The voice of an angel coming from a fragile woman, battling inner demons. The soundtrack includes some of Amy's most famous songs, and we get to listen to Amy explain the significance behind them. She tells us about "What is it about Men" and how it relates to her troubled relationship with her "Daddy". Through her music and intimate footage of the singer, we get to learn so much about the way her life played out. A troubled girl with daddy issues later developed to a troubled girl with addiction issues and toxic relationships. From Rehab to Back to Black, this troubled narrative is a reoccurring theme in her songs and her overall lifestyle. Amy will continue living in our hearts, and her music will continue impacting others. This film will forever be cherished as a personal diary of what was once Amy Winehouse.
