S-Town

Storytelling Cultures and Podcast

Script Proposal Due 11/21

Optional Podcast Dues 12/5

Brian Reed’s S-Town narrates a very specific story of one individual across seven chapters. Many have commented on the podcast’s novelistic structure and narration.

For this assignment, please propose a podcast. Pay attention to scope and scale: propose a podcast specific enough to tell a story but broad enough to address other cultural concerns. Pay attention to the genre: What kind of language do you need in an audio narrative? What kinds of things will you have to explain further?

Your proposal should include both an abstract (one paragraph) and a script introducing and describing the podcast. This introductory script should feel self-contained (Episode 1 or Chapter 1) but open to further “episodes” or “chapters” to come. It should be at least 500 words in length, but no more than 5 pages total.

It is not a requirement that you record the script you draft. However, I strongly encourage those with interest in developing audio skills to make at least a rough cut narrating your story. (There is an audio recording room in ECDS). We will listen to these in class on the last day should we have examples.
