Chapter 1 Transcript
John (Narrator): There aren’t many times in life that we get to witness a crime happen right before our eyes. Actually, most of us would be pretty lucky to live 100 years without seeing anything like that. For me, I wasn’t lucky. I wish I could have helped her but everything happened too quickly. I’ve been driving my entire life. My dad had me steering the wheel of his Chevy while he handled the gas pedal when I was still in diapers. Driving is what I loved to do and at night with my taxi, I was able to come alive. I was in total control of who came in and how the rest of their night went. That all changed when I met Sarah. I met Sarah one night when she was stumbling out of a bar. She was always doing something crazy like that. Her boyfriend had just left her and she had nowhere to go except for the sidewalk outside. I felt bad for the poor girl so I gave her a free lift. Since then, I’ve been her driver almost every Saturday night until just a few months back. I wish I could tell the rest of this story myself but I still can’t bear it. Matt and Bethany are doing the honors of telling all of you what I can’t put into words yet myself.
Matt Walker: It doesn’t look like you’re going too far tonight.
Bethany: Yeah, it’s only up in the canyon. Friend’s house is over there and she’s having a party.
Matt: Is it a big one tonight? Is that scumbag going to be there?
Bethany: Hell yeah it’s big. You’ve probably seen her house. It’s on the very top of Canyon Ridge in Silverado. And no, the scumbag probably won’t be there. This house actually belongs to my friend’s boyfriend and he has a say who comes and goes thankfully.
Matt: Well, that’s good.
Bethany: Oh don’t worry, it won’t be like the first night we met. Actually, I can’t even remember the first night we met.
Matt: There’s honestly not that much to remember. You had puke all over your shirt and you kept asking for Chris.
Bethany: Not even surprised.
Matt: We’re passed that now and on to a new chapter. Here’s your stop.
Bethany: Thanks! I’m not going to give you a time because I don’t want you to be waiting around for me but try to be here by maybe 2 or 3 a.m. I have to still work tomorrow at noon.
Matt: Will do, miss. Stay safe.
John (narrator): Stay safe will always be the last thing I said to her. I should’ve known something felt different about tonight. She just wasn’t as talkative as usual and kept wanting to reminisce about that night. I always still wonder about that night we met and what had happened before I picked her up. I never told her the truth but when I saw her on the ground, she wasn’t just covered in throw up. She was beat, and pretty badly too. Her eye was purple and black and she had dried blood coming out of her nose. When she woke up the next day, she must’ve thought she had just fallen while drunk. This was when I knew I had to help the poor soul. Don’t get me wrong, I’m not in love with her or anything. I just felt like no one in the world gave a damn about her.
Matt (on the phone): Beth, it’s almost 2, I’m heading over there now. Call me when you can.
Matt: Man, this girl cannot be trusted with a phone. Beth! Answer your phone I’m almost there.
John (narrator): I forgot how many times I called but I wasn’t too concerned at this point. This was normal for her. She was one of the flakiest girls I’ve seen but I knew that if I didn’t go get her, she’d be wandering through Silverado for the next week with a bottle of vodka in her hand. I just wish I knew this night was never going to be like the others. I used to threaten to throw her out if she threw up in my car before she got home but that night that would’ve been more than welcoming.
Bethany’s Voicemail: Hey it’s Bethany, you know what to do.
Matt: Girl, I know you always have your phone on you so answer it. I’m coming up around the corner so get your crap and I’m taking you home. If you don’t work, no more bottles.
John: I circled around the giant house a few times, looking for that tall girl in the too short dress that was probably still downing shots while everyone else was passed out. Man, that house was one of the nicest I’ve seen. How her friend managed to drag the owner into her web still beats me. I called a few more times at this point but knew I wasn’t going to get her. Once again, I had to try to find parking and go inside and physically drag her out and take her home. I was basically a glorified babysitter.
Matt: Hey! Can someone in here tell me where Bethany is?
Matt to random woman: You! Chick in the sequins, have you seen Bethany? Tall girl, reddish brown hair, wearing all black tonight.
Woman: First of all, who are you?
Matt: I’m here to take Beth home.
Woman: But who are you? How did you get in here? You know my boyfriend will kick you out as soon as he sees me talking to you right?
Matt: What’s with all the questions? I’m Matt, I’m Bethany’s driver for the night. She asked me to take her home so that’s what I’m doing.
Woman: Wait, did you say your name was Matt?
Matt Yeah?
Woman: Bethany left hours ago. She said that her driver Matt was outside and it was time for her to go. I haven’t seen her since.
