Mr. Robot Reflection
Mr. Robot is a show that is not only enjoyable to watch, but is interesting because it makes one think, as a viewer, if this is the path that our world is headed towards. Throughout the course we have learned about the ups and downs of new media whether that is social media, gadgets, or the Internet, we are clearly in an era of innovation that could change our social landscape. Mr. Robot explores this social landscape through the character of Elliot, a young, smart, paranoid man who envelops himself in the tech world. While I have only seen the two episodes we have watched in class, and thus cannot completely comment on the plot, I do believe that it is relevant to the downsides of social media we have explored in class. It seems that because of Elliot’s love, and arguable obsession of tech, he becomes detached from the real world. His decisions become foggy and it seems that right and wrong is blurred because of his inability to step outside of his tech bubble and look at the big picture. It seems that Elliot wants to hurt ECorp because of what he believes they did to his father, but doesn’t look at the other people he could be hurting. Aside from Elliot’s development as a character, Mr. Robot also introduces the idea of a complete shutdown of media caused by hackers. This is interesting because it makes the viewer think about the very real threat of hackers on our cyber security. In an age that is ruled by media, an Internet blackout would surely disturb many people’s everyday lives. Overall, Mr. Robot is binge worthy because of the questions it poses to the audience, making the viewer not just watch, but think.
