To Die For Reflection

The film To Die For is especially relevant in today’s society. For Suzanne Stone, being on TV was everything. She felt that in order to be relevant in this world, she had to be on television. This idea is bigger than ever thanks to social media. Many people now think that relevancy is directly tied to your “follower count.” This idea is similar to Suzanne’s belief but applicable to the present times, as the phone screen has largely replaced the television screen as the place of stardom and relevancy.

Suzanne’s desire to be a television star made her obsessive. She stopped thinking about her husband and only cared about her career that was clearly going nowhere. This too is relevant to today’s society, as many of the people at the top of the social media pyramid have cut ties with friends and family to improve their career. In addition, many of the top trending YouTubers are now making videos directly targeting their competitors.

Early on in YouTube, no single channel was large enough to survive on its own. As a result, people and channels would often collaborate and grow as a result. Now that the platform has become so large and mainstream, people are growing by taking jabs at larger channels. This concept of “taking out” competition is sad. Suzanne’s career is more illustrative of a YouTuber who has yet to understand the rules of the game, but has an obsession with getting big. As a result, she is destroying the life she has to try and create a life she cannot obtain.
