West vs. Urban: Who would you elect?

What does it mean to be a "provocateur?" According to Koby, to be a provocateur is to have "immense vocal power." In his analysis of Kanye West's Gold Digger, Koby claims that the only reason West's song was accepted by the masses is because he is an eternal state of vocal provocateur-dom. Should he have been in the "good girl/guy" or "temptress" stage of his career, both West and the song would have been shamed into oblivion.

I happen to agree with Koby. There is a massive stigma against women in the media industry and there has been for decades. Ever felt the urge to stand up to the patriarchal establishment? So have women of all ages from the flappers when they chopped their hair off to the slew of actresses who no longer feel victimized by the likes of Harvey Weinstein.

Koby goes on to point out that the comments section of West's YouTube video was akin to the likes of an anti-feminist rally in that someone generalized all Instagram models as gold diggers. But before you put on your pro-women t-shirts and pick up your pitchforks, Koby quickly comes to our defense as he calls such comments "immature and short-sighted."

But hold on, compare Koby's scholarly analysis of a derogatory modern anthem to Keith Urban's latest chart topper. Intended to support women in every way, Urban's "Female" calls out rape culture with a swift three lines in his second verse:

"When somebody laughs and implies that she asked for it / Just 'cause she was wearin' a skirt / Oh, is that how that works?"

And yet, the internet wasn't having it, calling Urban a "Feauxmenist" for "mansplaining" this cultural discretion. What makes Urban's song different from Koby's article? I'm going to have to say a bold nothing. Personally, I couldn't find any mansplanation in Urban's new hit seeing as he has first hand experience with someone who has worked in Weinstein's environment (*cough* his wife *cough cough*).

But just as the internet will follow Kanye West into oblivion -- or the White House, what's the difference at this point tbh -- it will also show no mercy to a male country star attempting to get in on the conversation.

Which is what this is.

A conversation.

With more than one side.

Let's not forget that.
