Meme Culture Reflection
Truth can often be exaggerated to the point of falsity. In the case of our memes about Donald Trump, they were untrue but were created for comedic purposes. The humor stemmed from the fact that Mexico clearly did not cause the hurricanes.
Since the reader would understand the sarcasm of the meme, it is acceptable to create a false scenario. The three memes we analyzed all relate to the recent hurricanes, Donald Trump, and Mexico. In the past, Trump stated that he planned to build a wall dividing the United States and Mexico. Furthermore, he said that he expects Mexico to pay for the wall. These comments gained mainstream attention and made many people upset.
Trump’s desire to remove illegal immigrants further angered his opposition and had led to a deteriorated image of the US-Mexico relationship. As a result, many people have used memes and other forms of comedy to poke fun at Trump’s feud with Mexico. The memes we gathered reflect this.
Combining Trump and Mexico with the recent hurricanes, our memes tied these current events together to create a joke about how Trump blames Mexico for the hurricanes. While this never happened, the reader of the meme would infer that the creator was joking. This type of comedy is acceptable because people understand that the falsity is part of the humor and not an attempt to give people incorrect information.
Overall, the memes we studied are an exaggeration of Trump’s Mexico relationship. The memes exaggerate Trump’s use of Mexico as a scapegoat and are strictly for comedy purposes. The memes were simply a reflection of mainstream events and ideas.
