Caché Reflection
This past Thursday we screened the film Caché, directed by Michael Haneke. The film, entirely in French was an interesting account of a family and their dark secrets.
Personally, I was not a huge fan of the film. I found it difficult to follow (partially because I neither speak nor understand a word of French.) I found the plot a bit slow and complicated, but perhaps that was my lack of understanding and the language barrier that existed.
The aspect of the film that bothered me most was the complete and utter lack of a soundtrack. I understand that was most likely an artistic choice, but I felt that it left the film with a hole. The empty space made me a bit bored and honestly a little uncomfortable. This may be because music is a huge part of my life, and I am constantly listening to it – I can’t even fall asleep in silence. Someone who is not as musically inclined may not feel the same way about the film. I just found myself wishing there was some sort of sound or music in moments of silence or in the background of scenes. The lack of soundtrack left me with an unfinished feeling about the movie.
I also think I would have been able to focus on the plot a bit more if I had not been so preoccupied by and centered on the fact that there was not a note of music throughout the entirety of the film.
Overall, I was not captivated by the film, but I can appreciate why others might enjoy it.
