Website in Progress, Revision 1
Since the start of the class, I have made a few significant changes to my personal website.
First, I bought my own web domain.
I considered going a more creative route for my domain name, perhaps with a witty pun or a short phrase that is meaningful to me. But, considering that I hope to use this website primarily as a professional portfolio, I decided that my name would best serve this purpose and lead to the least amount of cringing later on in my career.
Second, I made aesthetic changes in my home page layout. Unfortunately, I did not remember to screenshot my home page before these changes, but here is the updated version.
I changed the font of my welcome paragraph from Helvetica Light to Open Sans. As simple as this change might seem, I found that it made the page seem more inviting. The font is wider and more playful than Helvetica Light, which better fits the mood that I was aiming for. In addition to the font change, I made the lines of my welcome paragraph equal to one another, which gave the page cleaner lines and a more organized look. I also centered my "Hello there!" line, which was aligned to the left before, and changed it from Helvetica Light to the signature title font, adding more personal style. Overall, I am very happy with the effect of these small but significant changes.
Lastly, I rearranged my site's other pages to better reflect my work. Before, I had the following tabs: "Home, About Me, Portfolio, Social Media, Contact." Here are my current tabs:
In order to better reflect the work I am actively doing with my internship and my role in growing an educational nonprofit, I decided to nest my social media work for GPB alongside my work for Georgia Blossom under the same tab "Current Work." Now, my promo and advertising work is no longer under portfolio, and my portfolio is reserved for creative work I've done. In this process, I also deleted my link to my "Princess Project" Facebook feed as it is no longer active and doesn't strongly showcase my talents, so I felt that it was distracting from the more important information on my website. I am also considering unlinking my Gluten Free Vegan blog for this same reason; although I am personally invested in sustainable and healthy foods, it isn't very applicable to my professional content. Right now, my decision to keep it is based on the fact that it showcases an important part of my personality, which I believe is also important in getting to know me and my work.
In the future, I am looking to revamp my Resume page and make it more visually captivating and easy for the eye. I am considering ways to break the traditional Resume layout in order to make my experience tell a better story. Stay tuned for these updates!
