Mommy Reflection

The film Mommy was an extremely powerful film that showed how a mental illness could destroy the lives of many people. In the film, Steve, a teenager with ADHD, often became violent and put his mother, Diane, into many stressful situations. His uncontrollable, violent behaviors eventually led Diane to put her son in a hospital.

From the beginning, it was evident that Diane had to deal with Steve’s misconduct at an institution as he set it on fire and caused injuries to others. Diane had to take Steve back to live with her even when her financial situation was dire.

After getting fired, Diane desperately tried to get a new job all while dealing with Steve’s violence towards her. His violence appeared to be tamed by the presence of Kayla in his life. She started to homeschool Steve while Diane tried to make ends meet. Everything seemed to be stabilizing until Diane received a letter in the mail stating that the victim of Steve’s fire at the institution was planning to sue for a large sum of money.

Diane couldn’t afford a lawyer with her financial situation and was forced to become flirtatious with a lawyer on her street. Steve’s mental disorder not only made him violent but strangely attached to his mother. When he saw his mother and the lawyer together, he became jealous and angry. As he performed his karaoke song, he lost control after seeing his mother and the lawyer laughing drunkenly and being insulted by other people at the bar. His decision to attack one of the people at the bar completely ruins the night and ended the lawyer’s relationship with his mother.

In the end, Steve’s ADHD ruined his mother’s life and caused great harm to others. Diane had no choice but to send Steve to a hospital so she could live her life freely and escape the stress Steve placed on her.
